A RESPONSIBLE STARTING POINT

Supplements are not one-size-fits-all.

Families often ask whether vitamins or other supplements could support a child’s health. The useful answer depends on diet, feeding patterns, growth, medical conditions, medicines, laboratory findings when clinically indicated, and the exact ingredient and dose.

A supplement should not be presented as a cure for autism or a substitute for developmental, educational or medical care. “Natural” also does not automatically mean safe.

Before starting

Share the full label and ingredient list with your child’s doctor or pharmacist, especially if your child takes medicine, has allergies, follows a restricted diet or has a health condition.

A FIVE-POINT CHECK

What to consider before you buy.

1

Need

What specific nutritional gap or health goal is being addressed, and how was it identified?

2

Ingredients

Check the complete formula, allergens, added sugars, duplicate nutrients and ingredients hidden in blends.

3

Dose

More is not necessarily better. Children’s requirements and upper limits vary by age and circumstance.

4

Interactions

Supplements can interact with medicine, tests, surgery, other supplements and medical conditions.

5

Review

Agree on what will be monitored, for how long, and when to stop or seek advice if concerns arise.

✦

Quality questions

Ask about manufacturing, batch testing, storage, expiry and who to contact about adverse effects.

FOOD SELECTIVITY

When eating itself is the challenge.

If a child’s diet is very limited, first understand why. Pain, chewing or swallowing skills, sensory differences, anxiety, appetite, constipation and mealtime dynamics may all matter.
